5 Reasons why I quit social media (and why you should too)

On first examination, the choice to delete my Social Media (the Instagram app) happened rather abruptly and out of the blue. It was 8pm on a Tuesday (I know because I made a note of it for confirmation and accountability), and I just decided that it was time for a change.

Change being the operative word.

Because as you know, “if nothing changes, nothing changes,” and that phrase had been bothering me for some time. I wasn’t doing much with my life, and although social media wasn’t directly to blame, it did have a way of dulling my senses. But it didn’t just dull my senses. It also dampened my creative energy. I noticed that I couldn’t even read a book without wanting to check it, not to mention that my ability to concentrate seemed to be diminishing on the daily, while my need for scrolling and posting seemed more and more omnivorous.

It wasn’t that I was “out of control” but you could say I was undisciplined, and that was still precious time wasted that I could never get back.

Now while all of these reasons are good enough reasons to get rid of something, it started when I realized that if I wanted change in my life, I would have to start with something. And in order for it to be effective, it would have to be something that drew my attention or consumed my time without adding value to my life. And I believed that would lead to other “somethings” which would in turn lead to bigger change.

Aside from my desire to make a change in my life, I did make a list of reasons in my notes that I hope will resonate with you as well.

5 Reasons I deleted my Instagram app:

1. So that I could focus on and accomplish real goals instead of comparing my journey to others while sitting in a perpetual state of stagnancy.

2. To establish discipline in my life and break addictive tendencies (If I could establish discipline by sticking to this goal, this would lead to bigger discipline goals).

3.So that I could go on a personal growth journey without the watching eyes of my friends and followers. Note: It is okay to leave some things to the imagination!

4.To improve my attention span and concentration, and rejuvenate my creative energy

5. So that I could examine and heal my need for approval and attention from others (that I didn’t even know was there until recently).

The result: Since deactivating and uninstalling my Instagram app, I already feel less anxious, more focused, and I got through my first chapter in a book without distraction (quite a feat for me!). I also feel less pressed to constantly check my phone which means I actually forget about it sometimes!

I hope this has been inspiring, and I would love to hear your thoughts in the comment section.
